Penny had enjoyed too many years of pheasant hunting on Echoewood, our dog training area. Her marking skills come close to psychic. Her incredible nose can hone in on a wily pheasant, but also told her, "I smell a bird over there...not where Carol is trying to tell me to go..." Add to the problem her hit and miss foundation work and you're looking at a lot of entries that didn't produce. My friend, Bob Reckart agreed to do me a HUGE favor and took her on for about 3 weeks prior to the 2003 Golden National Specialty. He knew she was the ultimate challenge and time was short, but he convinced her to turn the corner and become a team player. She went 5 for 7 since then.
